How to search

Show printer-friendly view Print View
You can search through all the digital material made available by the participating European minority language communities, regardless of their location. If you want to carry out a search in one of more specific repositories, you can do so by defining an extended search query.
Searches are carried out in the metadata and in the full texts of the material.
To narrow down a search query, you can also indicate whether a search term or terms should appear in a specific metadata field.

Standard searches are for objects in which all the terms submitted appear in their metadata.

Two search methods

Two types of search are possible.
A 'simple search' using the search screen at the top left of the page.
An 'extended search' using the option in the menu on the right-hand side of the home page.

Simple search

A 'simple search' can be conducted using the search screen which appears at the top left of each page.

Extended search

An 'extended search' is conducted by selecting the 'SEARCH (extended)' option in the menu on the right-hand side of the EMILL.org home page.

Immediately under the field for the search term, you can choose which specific minority language repository you wish to search. The query language will be English or is dependent on the repository of the participating language community.
In the default configuration, all options are activated.
You can also state whether a search term may appear in any metadata field, or must be specifically in the object title, author, descriptor or minority language the publication is published in.

The metadata-fields of the several repositories are not similar.

Combining search terms

Search terms can be combined using AND, OR, +, -, and NOT.
Examples:

  • Galician AND education
  • Results contain both 'Galician' and 'education'.
  • Galician OR children
  • Results contain either 'Galician' or, 'children' or both.
  • (Galician OR education) AND children. Results contain either 'Galician' or 'education' or both, and also 'children
  • +Bilingual-children NOT 'minority language'.
  • Results must contain 'bilingual' and not contain 'children' and not the phrase 'minority language'.

Wildcards

You can search on terms that are specified only partially by using *, ?, ~.
Examples:

  • * matches one or more characters
  • Bilingual* will find documents containing e.g. bilingual, bilingualism and bilingual education.
S*ation will find documents containing e.g. 'standardization', 'socialization',
'segregation'.
  • Standardi?ation
  • ? matches one character, so this will find 'standardization' as well as 'standardisation'
  • ~ can be used for fuzzy searching
Proximity

Use the ~sign plus a number to specify that terms shoud be found close together.
Example:

  • 'bilingual education'~10
This will find documents in which the words 'bilingual' and 'education' are at most 10 words apart (note: in 'bilingual education' the words would have to appear next to each other).
