EMILL : European Minority Languages Library
The EMILL-website is a prototype of the Frisian pilot project for the creation of a digital library on European Minority Languages which was started by Mercator-Education in August 2003. The Frisian pilot-project is financed by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. The pilot ends on the 30th of April 2005.The aim is to develop a digital library to index, classify and catalogue scientific sources concerning European minority languages and knowledge of and from academic researchers.
The content will be scientific and concerns the following areas: language and literature, education, law, media, sociolinguistics and history of culture.
This pilot serves as a development model for partners in other European linguistic communities. The Biblioteca Virtual Galega is as partner, representative of the Galician linguistic community.
A databank on organizations will also be included.
The language of communication is English and the minority language of the participating language community.
Mercator – Education is in search for more partners on the European Minority Languages Library project, also called EMILL. It is the intention to proceed and extend the project in a European context with EU funds. The goal of the EMILL project is to establish a network of digital libraries of minority languages and the creation of a European portal. Ideal partners for the project are libraries in a minority language community. Either they have a lot of experience with a digital library, either they are just looking into the possibilities, in both cases this project can be very interesting.
